There are numerous reasons why someone might want to change his or her name. Whether it is because you changed your gender, you want to improve your chances of finding a job¹ or your name reminds you of a certain trauma. Luckily, all Dutch Nationals can request or petition a change of name. The procedure for changing your first name or surname differs in the Netherlands.
First name
If you want to legally change your first name you will have to contact a lawyer to file a petition with the competent Dutch court. You are – provided that your name was erroneously registered, your name causes continual psychological damages or when your name is no longer suitable – allowed to change your first name. Our lawyers can help you to prove that there are significant reasons for changing your first name and make sure your new name is not unlawful.
Surname
If you want to change your surname you will have to send a request to the Ministry of Security and Justice. A successful request will lead to the changing of your details in the Personal Records Database. The aid of a lawyer is not required, but can ensure that you file the correct grounds for the name change. In addition, you yourself are responsible for the adjustments of your documents like your passport or driver license. A lawyer can secure that your name change is completely processed.
Furthermore there is an important upcoming legislative change that will alter the procedure if you want to change your surname because you’re a victim of certain crimes. As of the first of July 2020 a victim of a crime against his or her identity or personal integrity can request the altering of its surname free of charge. Furthermore the conditions will be more flexible. For example, you will be able to file a statement of your BIG-, NIP-. Of NVO-registered therapist² instead of a statement of an independent BIG-registered psychologist or psychiatrist.
